As toddlers of the ‘90s, it’s safe to say that most students at Penn probably grew up watching Beauty and the Beast on repeat until the tapes in our VCR videos were frayed. Even when we weren’t watching the animated classic, some of us spent priceless hours of our childhoods listening to the film’s soundtrack (if you’re like me, this also involved the heartfelt dancing and re–enactments that come along with pretending you’re a Disney character).

While Penn was inventing new words for parties (what the hell is a "snarty?") in Philadelphia, I was getting (Irish) jiggy with it amongst hordes of leprechaun–garbed partiers in Dublin. So what are the real sights and sounds (s/o Street Beats) of St. Patrick's Day? We're taking you from 34th Street to Grafton Street to find out—drunken interviews included.

A quick Google will tell you they’re a “rock band”, but we’ll respectfully disagree—Portugal. The Man is so much more. Think a prog–rock (read: progressive rock), indie band, with influences from hip–hop to Bowie to Ghostface Killah to the Beatles and then some. Press play while you sort that out...

Now that Spring’s Break come and gone, we’ve all got one thing on our minds—and if this isn’t it, you’re doing it wrong. Spring Fling’s going down April 21–22, which is just 36 days(!) from now. It’s not like we’re counting or anything.

This is a playlist for sitting in the sun and eating cereal after your Econ midterm. A playlist to remind you that good things exist on the horizon, past the shitstorm of papers and presentations. A playlist to calm you down. Take a deep breath. Put in your headphones. Let it happen.

Signing to a famous rapper's label might seem like a big break to those outside of the industry, but sometimes, this career path can impede an artist’s career more than it can help. Take a look at Young Money’s roster, for example—besides Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj, there’s a horde of rappers that you’ve never heard of who can brag about being signed to Birdman but may never see a dollar from it. It goes beyond financial implications too—Omen, for example, who is signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, dropped a track called “Big Shadows” that expresses his frustrations being the small guy signed to the big guy.

The Nutshack, an adult cartoon from 2007, is popularly known as “THE WORST ANIMATED SHOW EVER MADE.” It ran for two seasons (amazingly), has a 2.3 on IMDb and isn’t available on any streaming services.

I'm five–years–old, and my grandmother has just passed away. I don’t exactly understand what’s going on, but my mom’s voice quivers every now and then, and I think that must mean she’s really, really sad. From my car seat, I make eye contact with her in the rearview mirror and see that her eyes are all shiny. She tries to speak, but that thick quiver makes her words sound all funny. I panic and start singing because I don’t know what else to do and I just don’t want mom to cry. We just learned “The National Anthem” in kindergarten. It’s the only song I can think of, so I belt it out at the top of my lungs. For the next few months, every time I hear my mom’s voice quiver I break out into song until I see her smile, laugh softly to herself and reach back from the driver’s seat to hold my hand.

It was a sunny April day—a Sunday. I was hungover. The trek to Buie’s food truck was pleasant enough. The air smelled of summer.

Releasing a cover song—especially one with an original version that your listeners are most likely familiar with—is always a daunting task. In most cases, no matter how good your version is, it’ll never escape the shadow of the original.

For those of you with your heads still in your textbooks, the Grammys just happened this past Sunday (whether you care or not). The night saw big wins for Adele (and by extension, Beyonce) and the late David Bowie. However, the biggest winner of the night was arguably Chance the Rapper, aka last year's Fling headliner that you may or may not have glazed over. After fans petitioned the Grammys to allow award eligibility for streaming–only albums, Chance’s newest mixtape, Coloring Book, was nominated for not one, not two, but three Grammys. Ultimately, Chance came out on top, winning “Best Rap Performance,” “Best Rap Album,” and “Best New Artist.” Chance’s big Grammy night is exciting for all the fans that have followed him since his previous mixtapes, #10Day and Acid Rap. However, Chance’s Grammy wins transcend that fateful night for a host of reasons—he's changing the face of rap as we know it.

Tired of all the light, bubblegum pop verses clogging your airways during this love season? Tune back to classic rock and listen to Mick Jagger practically beg for your love. “Beast of Burden” seems to be one of the few love songs where the man reveals his insecurities: that he is not rich enough, tough enough or hard enough to be a woman’s man. Jagger’s inflection makes you feel his desperation as he yells out, “I'll tell ya. You can put me out. On the street. Put me out. With no shoes on my feet. But, put me out, put me out. Put me out of misery.” It’s raw, and it’s real.

There's been a big movement in R&B towards throwback/90's sounds in the past year or so, and I don't think anyone is doing it as well as Syd. Her new album is awesome, and this is my favorite song on it—mostly because of the uncredited feature by Steve Lacy, an 18–year–old kid who joined Syd's band The Internet before graduating high school and has already produced on J. Cole's most recent album. Beyond his production chops, he has a great singing voice that gives me Pharrell vibes. The song might be about throwing dollar bills at strippers but it FEELS like a love song, and that's what matters.

“Easton & Main” by the Turnpike Troubadours tells the story of a lovesick guy who fell for a girl at Cain’s Ballroom, a popular concert venue in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He croons about seeing a pretty girl in the “artificial moonlight” at Cain’s, and how he regrets leaving his “heart in Tulsa.” The slow, twangy melody evokes a sense of longing and nostalgia as the singer reminisces on that fateful night.

Music is storytelling. And this particular story hurts...a lot. It’s about heartbreak and falling out of love and the simple, haunting language of the lyrics is enough to make my English major heart feel some kind of way. There’s an earnestness to the song–writing that's captured particularly well in this live version. Hey, we never said all love songs were happy.

I'm shamelessly in love with everything Whitney (Ed. note: Not Houston), and now it's your turn. This song taps into that feeling when you just want to be with that person you love—the would–be cheesy lyrics plus ridiculous guitar make it anything but cliché. Exhibit A: "I wanna take you out, I wanna drive around with you with the windows down." Try it, I dare you—you'll be feeling all the feelings.

At some point, it hits you—the song your parents loved from the '80s and forced you to listen to is actually steeped in sexual imagery. Mom and Dad just knew you wouldn’t get it. Don’t feel betrayed or stupid. Laugh it off. We’ll help you start the healthy process by offering our five largest misinterpretations.
