Whether or not the soundtrack to your walk on Locust lately has been Ed Sheeran's new album, "Divide," there's one thing you can't deny: he's got a way with words (Ed. note: get your tissues ready). Sheeran is a storyteller in this album, exploring love, loss, and self–discovery through his tracks, which are sung and delivered with a lovable mixture of emotionally honesty and charisma. Sheeran embraces sincerity in this album—he has an ability to sing arguably corny or overtly sentimental lyrics and make them sound real. He's also extremely self–aware of his fame and position in the music industry. By sharing his experiences and singing about them so thoughtfully, he crafted an album that tells a story. Here are my favorite lyrics from each track:
1. "I chased the pictured perfect life, I think they painted it wrong" - Eraser
We all have this idea of a picture–perfect life or college experience, and well sometimes the picture isn't clear all of the time. We get off track, lose purpose, and feel inadequate amongst others around us. Ed turns this equation around and makes the picture seem imperfect, not us.
2. "One friend left to sell clothes/One works down by the coast/One had two kids but lives alone/One's brother overdosed/One's already on his second wife/One's just barely getting by/But these people raised me/And I can't wait to go home" - Castle on The Hill
I love the way that Sheeran describes his friends as "raising him." We often think of growing up with our childhood friends, but I've never thought of how we may raise each other into the people we become. Just another reason why they say, "there's no place like home." Sometimes home isn't the walls of the house, it's the people around. Well said, Ed.
3. "You're a mystery/I have travelled the world, there's no other girl like you" -Dive
It's simple to say that all people are mysteries another needs to uncover. I love how this is the way he describes this girl whom he loves. Plus, Ed has actually travelled the world, so it makes this line even more honest and beautiful.
4. "Your love was handmade for somebody like me" - Shape Of You
This song is hands down the sexiest on the album. However, I love how he intertwines the love he has for this woman into the song, rather than just singing about the physical. This would make a beautiful hallmark card saying. Love is unique even though it can be sung about so universally.
5. "Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms/Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song" - Perfect
The title of this song is "perfect," and so is this scene. Ed's telling us this story of this night and well I feel like I'm there—or wish I was.
6. "As we fill up our lungs with the cold air of the night/I walked her home then she took me inside/Finish some Doritos and another bottle of wine" - Galway Girl
This is raw. Love isn't always roses and mood–lighting. Sometimes it is just a bottle of wine and Doritos.
7. "My friends told me one day I'd feel it too/I know I could smile to hide the truth/But I know I was happier with you" - Happier
This song breaks our hearts a little, because a lot of us have been here. Happier with the person who is happiest with somebody else. I hope she comes around, Ed. The truth hurts—especially when it comes down to who we love and if we are able to love them.
8. "And when we sipped champagne out of cider cans/I guess if you were Louis Lane, I wasn't Superman/Just a young boy tryin' to be loved/So let me give it to ya"- New Man
I'm loving the Superman/Louis Lane reference here. Like I said, its corny, but Ed makes it feel real somehow. Also, the imagery of sipping champagne out of cans is thought-provoking.
9. "She is the flint that sparks the lighter/And the fuel that will hold the flame, oh" - Hearts Don't Break Around Here
Now, doesn't every girl want to be described like this?
10. "Love could change the world in a moment/But what do I know" - What Do I Know
Ed is telling us all what we need to be hearing right now. LOVE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD IN A MOMENT. We have time each and every day, 24 hours in fact, to show people how much we care for and appreciate them. We can choose to spread love and kindness. It's always a choice.
11. "We were sat upon our best friend's roof/I had both of my arms around you/Watching the sunrise replace the moon" - How Would You Feel
This is the most beautiful description of a sun rise that I have read in a while. Sunrises with lovers—so corny right? But somehow, Ed brings us into that moment and we feel his reality.
12. "A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved" - Supermarket Flowers
This is a positive, beautiful perspective to think about heart break from. Especially, when it comes to losing a loved one. Ed makes grieving sound beautiful, despite how painful it is. (Ed. note: this is a song that grieves his passed grandmother and its incredibly uplifting and beautiful, go listen now.)
13. "You’re like something that God has sent me/I want you baby SOLAMENTE" -Barcelona
This song is fun. It makes you want to fly to Barcelona and dance your heart out. He describes his lover as god–sent—now that's a compliment.
14. "And in the pocket of my jeans are only coins and broken dreams/My heart is breaking at the seams and I'm coming apart now" -Bibia Be Ye Ye
Ed portrays an image of himself at a low. Society tends to glorify fame. This makes us think differently. The celebrities and stars we adore are human too, and they're not invincible to pain or suffering.
15. "Don't care about religion/I'm gonna marry the woman I love" - Nancy Mulligan
Love has no boundaries, limitations or restrictions. Thanks for the reminder, Ed.
16. "I gave all my oxygen to people that could breath" - Save Myself
This is my favorite line in the entire album. I think sometimes due to our innate desires to care for people, we can give too much of ourselves and of our energy away. It's a special thing to prioritize caring for others but it's important to question whether they would do the same for you. Self–care is important. If we give away too much of ourselves, we have nothing left.
