Even though new music comes out every day of the year, it’s often the ones from the summer that stick with us most as the background of memories from road trips, barbecues, and warm nights out. Though it’s not technically summer yet, several artists have released music over the past few weeks that will undoubtedly be dominating the airwaves in the months to come.
This early summer playlist features more than its fair share of rock, including Ty Segall’s new single “Good Boy” and a new version of Liz Phair’s “Fuck and Run.” The Arctic Monkeys also make an appearance with “Star Treatment,” the first track off of their divisive new concept album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. We’ve even got some sounds from down under with new music from both Middle Kids and Courtney Barnett.
None of these rock artists are to be overlooked (especially not the 18–year–old wunderkind behind Snail Mail), but two stars of this playlist are Childish Gambino, with his powerful critique of gun violence in “This is America,” and Leon Bridges, who just came out with funk–infused Good Thing as a follow–up to his widely acclaimed debut, Coming Home. Summer in the city is upon us, so crank up the speaker and let this new music be the sound behind whatever you’re doing to relax.
