This Super Bowl is a big one—Philly vs New England (Ed. note: go birds). Considering that a significant portion of Penn students are from these two areas, everyone is bound to have a favorite team. If you are hosting a Super Bowl party, here are some awesome snacks that might alleviate some of the tension in the room.
Guacamole
What’s a superbowl party without guac? This super easy and super delish guacamole will for sure be a crowd pleaser. Seriously, who doesn’t love a nice avocado laidan chip?
- Mash 4 avocados in a bowl
- Add ¼ of a cup of diced red onion and 1 large tomato diced
- OPTIONAL: add 1 diced jalapeno pepper
- Juice 1 lime into the mix as well as a pinch of salt and a few cracks of pepper and mix well
Buffalo Cauliflower
Buffalo anything means that it’s likely going to be amazing. But with this version, you can be a little healthier so you don’t feel as bad about the 15 beers that you are about to chug.
- Preheat the oven to 450 and spray a baking sheet with oil.
- Grab your favorite buffalo sauce or mix 2 teaspoon of garlic powder, a pinch of salt, a tablespoon of melted butter, and ¾ of a cup of hot sauce.
- Add 6 cups of fresh cauliflower florets and make sure they are fully coated.
- Spread the cauliflower on the baking sheet and bake until crispy (approx. 20 minutes).
- Serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing.
If you don’t want to cook, we've rounded up some classic New England and Philly themed foods that you can buy.
Sandwiches:
Lobster Roll: it's hard to think about New England without a lobster roll. Our favorite is from Luke’s Lobster (BONUS: they deliver via Postmates).
Cheesesteak: Philadelphia and cheesesteaks is like salt and pepper, Meredith Grey and McDreamy, or the Quad and Fling (oh wait...). Every Philadelphian has their favorite, but the “majors” are Pat’s and Geno's on 9th and Passyunk and Jim’s on South. On campus you can visit Abner’s (38th and Chestnut), Greek Lady, or Zesto’s.
Local Delicacies:
Philly: Tomato pie, soft pretzels, “wooder” ice, and Crab Fries (these are just fries with Old Bay and you can get them at Zesto’s).
New England: Chowah (another thing that you can get at Luke’s Lobster) and whoopie pies (you can get these at Beiller’s and Flying Monkey in Reading Terminal)
