What it is: The two best weeks of your life, AKA a Penn program open to all majors that allows you to attend the Cannes Film Festival in May. Penn–in–Cannes counts as one full credit cinema class (CINE 039).
The application process:
-
Attend one of the info sessions in Fisher–Bennett 401 at 5 p.m. on December 3rd or January 28th.
-
Stop by Nicola Gentili’s office in the same building. He’s the program director, and will discuss your interest and application with you.
-
Wait for the application to open around winter break (we suggest that you apply by the first application deadline in early 2015—it’s competitive.)
-
Apply for funding at the financial aid office for summer grants or loans if necessary. The program fees vary year to year.
The program:
-
Attend the mandatory pre–departure lectures on March 27th and April 24th.
-
Write a pre–departure paper and watch at least six acclaimed international films.
-
Complete the necessary administrative paperwork (flight information, health insurance, etc.)
-

-
Watch movies. And more movies. And more movies.

Write about them. Keep a journal. Attend meetings. Write a paper.
The perks:
Penn–in–Cannes is by far one of Penn’s best–kept secrets. Sure, there’s work to do. You have to watch a bunch of movies and actually review them—but they’re some of the best in the business. Plus, the fun you have largely makes up for that. Cannes is a beautiful place any month of the year, but in May it becomes the hub for anyone remotely interested in film. We’re talking huge entertainment companies, the best of production, indie artists and up–and–coming talent as well as big names. In Cannes, you’ll have the unique opportunity to meet with Penn alumni in the business, and since the town is small, you’re bound to run into some of your favorites. For the parties, find your way to clubs like Gotha and VIP Room, where you can expect to see famous performers and regulars like Adrien Grenier and Paris Hilton. Don’t miss the hotel bars (aim for the Carlton) or the pop–ups either. You won’t be disappointed.
