“Salad Days” finds Mac having grown up a bit. Lyrically, there’s less of the insistent I–don’t–give–a–fuck conceit that could make his earlier work seem somewhat affected. His indignation is still there, notably on “Goodbye Weekend,” but it feels more authentic than it did before. The album’s more pensive songs have a unique sincerity that helps them to seem genuine as well. Every technical aspect is improved in “Salad Days”—the guitar is catchier, Mac’s voice is stronger and the songs’ textures vary enough to keep the listener interested. “Salad Days” is Mac’s best album yet.
