“VOICES”—PHANTOGRAM

In a world of CHVRCHES and Grimes and Neon Indian and The xx, atmospheric synth–pop is pretty much everywhere. Phantogram has been up there with the rest of the chillwave best since “Eyelid Movies” debuted in 2010, but this time they refuse to just melt into the background as you shop at Urban Outfitters. This album is more assertive and much more dance–friendly. Admittedly, the persistent mid–tempo patterns can get sort of old. “Howling at the Moon” has an amazing, sharp beat, but the chorus falls flat in comparison. On the other hand, instant anthems like "Black Out Days" and "Fall In Love" get right in your head and are definitely enough to make up for it.

Grade: A–

Sounds best when: In a cab crossing the South Street bridge with the Center City skyline in view.
