1. Hannah: Hannah has been accepted into graduate school for writing. It’s sweet how surprised she was by it and how happy it made both her and her parents. This is Hannah doing something constructive for herself and that is rewarding to see after watching her flounder for so long. However the heartbreak written on Adam’s face when she breaks the news to him that the program is in Iowa is devastating.
2. Marnie: She’s still chasing a music career she probably won’t have and a man she probably can’t have. Marnie saw the least character development this season and every time we come back to her we’re reminded of how immature she truly is.
3. Shosh: This was Shosh’s year of freedom, to take charge and figure her life out. She crashed hard. As the youngest member of the girls, she was supposed to be graduating this year, but she ended up failing a class and was left three credits short. This and Marnie’s confession of having slept with Ray sets her off, and she realizes how destructive her year has been. She reaches out to Ray, begging to get back together. She’s desperately searching for some stability and familiarity—but Ray turns her down and poor Shosh falls into tears.
4. Jessa: Jessa, unsurprisingly, has been all over the map—but this episode saw her as a functioning and compassionate human; it was refreshing and a pleasure. Of course, though, functioning and compassionate for Jessa means aiding an old woman commit suicide and then rushing to call 911 when the woman changes her mind, but we’d never want to see Jessa doing anything too normal any way!
5. Final thoughts: This season was disjointed, the girls are all in such different places that they hardly shared any screen time. And it was their interactions that made the show so fantastic in the first two seasons. Maybe it hurts more because it’s so easy to see their falling out happen with our own college friends—but it’s Hannah–centric themes (however realistic it might be for the progression of Hannah’s life) left the season unable to reach the highs of seasons past.
