1. What an opening scene! When the first scene of a show involves the main character getting a hand job in a park from stranger that could be described as “gym teacher hairy,” you know things are going to be interesting. Things get even funnier when Patrick is teased about the encounter by his friends, Agustín and Dom. The trio falls into an easy dynamic indicative of long time friends and it’s nice to see them sitting around and joking with each other. Hopefully the series returns to scenes of the trio hanging out and just joking around together often
2. Patrick's date goes all wrong. Patrick meets his perfect match on OkCupid. The show makes several funny jokes about online dating in today’s world, such as Instagram filters distorting profile pics or Patrick overusing wink emoticons in his messages (which makes me reconsider my own texting habits). But his date with Ben is disastrous. Ben could not have been more boring and condescending. What kind of person asks someone if they want a drink and then makes them pay for it? At least Patrick meets someone else on his train ride home; it’s nice to see that online dating isn’t the only way to meet people. It will be interesting to see Patrick go outside of his comfort zone.
3. Agustín has a threesome. Agustín, Patrick’s roommate, decides to move in with his boyfriend Frank. But then the couple ends up having a threesome with Agustín’s new co–worker. This storyline had very few jokes, but the drama of the situation is intriguing. With things already a bit weird between Agustín and Frank, it will be interesting to see whether they can work through things together. But with Frank already questioning whether they even want the same things, a break up seems inevitable.
4. Dom is tired of his life. Dom, a waiter nearing the age of 40 and living with an ex–girlfriend, has the most depressing life of the trio. Dom seems to have an easy time picking up one night stands, though. When he uses his co–worker’s own advice as an innuendo to pick him up, it’s probably one of the funnier moments of the episode. But calling his ex does not seem like it’s going to end well. It’s nice that he wants to advance professionally, but calling an abusive ex is not the way to do it.
5. It's a good start for the show. This was a strong episode that set the foundation for the series going forward. It’s not an outright comedy, but most of the jokes sprinkled throughout worked well. The three main characters felt well defined, and the city of San Francisco really felt like a part of the show.
