“Gossip Girl” was not just a ‘shining beacon of hope’ for those interested in the Upper East Side, bombshell blondes and family drama. While it aired, the show’s music served as the soundtrack to the concrete jungle. In season 2 episode 4, the heavy bass/techno sounds of Santigold’s “Shove It” echoed in Serena’s war against Dan. In the past, viewers have also rocked out to such indie rock tunes as “Young Blood” by The Naked and Famous and “U + Me =” by Dan Black. And when Olivia, Dan and Vanessa had that infamous threesome, the mellow cover of “Whatever You Like” by Anya played in the background. The show was known to feature indie artists alongside big names like Adele, Kanye West and Jay-Z. “Gossip Girl” effortlessly played matchmaker with song and scene, creating a seamless sensory experience.
The music reflected not only the feeling of the scene, but of the characters themselves. When “Runaway” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played, it echoed both the unresolved problems Chuck was running away from and the arms of the new man that Serena was running into. In season 3, when Blair pulled connections to get Lady Gaga to perform “Bad Romance,” it served as a commentary on her relationship with Chuck and its perpetual downward spiral.
The soundtrack even transcended the show itself. “Gossip Girl” played Taylor Momsen’s band the week of their first performance in NYC, as well as Leighton Meester’s song the week her music video debuted. During the Fashion’s Night Out episode in season 4, much of the episode’s music was used to promote Fashion Week in the fall of that year.
Despite the show’s conclusion, it will continue to be remembered for its musical offerings. You know you want to listen…
