Yugen, a term significant in traditional Japanese aesthetics, refers to profundity stemming from subtlety It proves to be an apt title for Koreless’ most recent effort. Feigning no attempt at imitating organic sound, the Glasgow producer creates a product that’s computed precision endowed with a cold, ethereal beauty. Using remarkably few sounds and repeating samples over the course of multiple tracks, the EP is woven into a cohesive whole. Instead of being detraction, however, the repetition adds to the minimal ambiance of the work. Yugen, as a result, dons a sort of Sci-Fi vibe. The music is even reminiscent in some ways of Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey, in that it shares the symmetrical frames and drawn out scenes of this classic film.
As you begin your summer, Yugen could easily provide the soundtrack to a contemplative pause, reflecting, perhaps, on all of the time you wasted in the past year looking at BuzzFeed articles.
