A new trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s adaption of "The Great Gatsby" was just unveiled, and it’s exactly as you’d expect. Hopefully, we don’t need to remind you of the plot of one of the greatest American tales of all time—but in case we do, this trailer pretty much sums it all up. The eagerly awaited "Gatsby" is scheduled to open the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and will be released in theaters May 10.
What We Love: Beyonce and Andre 3000’s cover of Amy Winehouse’s single “Back to Black”. Interlaced with Joel Edgerton’s chilling accusations directed at an aging Leonardo DiCaprio, the result is electrifying. Carey Mulligan looks like a nymph (no surprise there), impressively emulating the infamous Daisy, who is responsible for helping Gatsby believe that “the rock of the world was founded securely on a fairy’s wing.” Finally, Tobey Maguire’s voiceover, reciting Fitzgerald’s legendary lines, is a perfect balance between soothing and eerie.
What We Don’t: The trailer drags on for almost three minutes and one too many key moments are revealed. Additionally, the film begins to nervously teeter on tacky, with enormous fireworks and over-the-top fairy tale colors. In contrast, sepia toned images are used to denote memories of “the past”, which only further cheapen the whole experience. Then, Lana Del Rey? Come on. Even Florence + The Machine’s song “Over the Love”—booming lyrics about “the green light”—is almost too much, hitting us over the head with its symbolism.
