Get a cheesesteak: If you're headed to Chicago for Pitchfork (we are, too) or planning a trip to Lolla, we suggest a detour to Philly's Best where both the cheesesteak recipe and the tastykakes are imported from out East. Get both and a soda and you won't breach ten dollars.
Go to a BYO: Allegedly, restaurant owners have the hardest time acquiring liquor licenses in Texas (who would've thunk it could get worse than Philly?). Stop sweltering in the Lone Star State and take advantage. Dallas is scattered with spots to bring your own. Try Eden's on Lovers Lane. Word is get the quiche ($15.50, changes daily).
Buy the Metro Cookbook: It's only $10 on Amazon and it's got a fancy hardback cover to make you feel like an adult, so you won't even need an apron. Flip through this baby for recipes on how to bake fig scones, lemon bars and brioche bread. Not a baker? Consider it great food porn.
Stream WXPN at home: Everyone enjoys a little top 40 from time to time. But if LMFAO's latest is getting old, or if you miss local Philly bands, savor the technological revolution that is online radio. XPN, Penn's public radio station, offers four internet stations for all your indie and folk inclinations. Stream them from your laptop at work or your phone on your daily commute. Be st of all, it's free. And you don't even have to break any piracy laws.
Drink la Colombe: You can get la Colombe coffee at shops all over the country, but true devotees can stop in at the brand’s signature cafés in New York (TriBeCa, SoHo and NoHo) and Seoul, Korea.
Attend your city’s spin on a First Friday: When you’re not out getting some sun, go get some culture. Not only is art really important, but some times it comes with food. For under 20 bucks, you can wine and dine at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago on every first Friday (they have Wolfgang Puck hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar til 9pm).Or, in Oregon, Portlanders can take a break from organic farming with free art gallery openings on first Thursdays. Although admission is free, your lunch isn’t — plan on eating beforehand or BYO-ing some grub.
Visit another LOVE statue: You wouldn’t believe the list of variations on Robert Indiana’s LOVE statue Wikipedia’s compiled. Vermonters — one’s planted on Middlebury’s campus. Get drunk at a Blarney Stone: Granted, these Blarney Stones won’t be ironically located next door to a Penn police garage, but the one is Seattle has an outdoor patio and Nintendo Wii on a big screen TV (ed note: oh you fancy, huh?). If you’re feeling lucky, the Blarney Stone Pub in San Diego has live authentic Irish music (we’re not sure what that entails either). Or, if you just need to get riotously drunk, do a Blarney Stone bar crawl in New York — there are at least four of them in the city. We bet you won’t make it past happy hour.
