Street caught up with Theophilus London after his show at Union Transfer on Tuesday, October 25. Check out what he has to say about ketchup stains and cookies.
Street: "Stand Alone" sounds a lot like 80s music – where do you get your inspiration? Theophilus London: I get inspiration from the Police, James Brown. All those guys.
Street: What about your personal sense of style – 'Clothes don't make the man, it's the man that makes the clothes?' TL: I think it doesn't matter how much your shoes cost, how much your jacket costs, shit doesn't mean shit, it's all about the guy wearing it. If you don't have any confidence or you're not cool and sexy, it doesn't matter. I can wear t–shirts with ketchup stains and still try to pull it off.
Street: Right. How did you get Lindsay Lohan in your "Oops" video? TL: The photographer that was shooting with me knew her and he knew she was my obsession of all time.
Street: It's a sexy video! TL: I'm over her though.
Street: You're over her? Who's your new obsession? TL: I haven't found her yet. Or, I haven't found him yet.
Street: We read somewhere you won't cut your hair when you're recording – how come? TL: Yeah. that was for my last album. But for this album, I'm gonna cut my hair when I'm recording.
Street: What's your inspiration for your new album? TL: My inspiration is, aw man. If I told you'd be like – oh. Cookies.
Street: What about cookies? TL: Cookies, like, eating cookies on a Sunday or Monday morning – that's what the music's gonna sound like.
Street: What's your favorite track on your most recent album? TL: "Love is Real."
Theophilus London will be performing tonight, November 4, at 8 p.m. at the SPEC-TRUM fall concert at Irvine Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased here.
