Stepping into a swim club from Philly’s mid–summer, humidity–soaked heat, I expect nothing short of refreshing satisfaction, and Chenango — Arrow Swim Club’s restaurant — delivers in that aspect. Though not exactly innovative, the beachy dining offers some solidly tasty items and a cool ambiance. The restaurant is set with jazzed–up picnic tables and a fire–pit for “garden lounge” seating, while the inside spread offers more sophisticated, modern decor. The concrete atmosphere dominates the interior, at a loss of the “summer nights” aura of the outdoors, but it continues with the feel of pool–side dining, and the food follows in this stride.
We tried the crab-cake sandwich ($14), which simply had a well–prepared patty, but — like the rest of the fare — it had a twist to it that elevated it from standard. A spicy zip to the cake was unexpected, but welcome. Likewise, the fries were tasty, with a somewhat bland texture, but some slices of sweet potato made the side a sweet and salty duo.
We also tried the Arrow burger ($9), which boasted wonderfully fresh veggies and a bun that was sweet and delicious enough to merit its own dessert, making the beef itself an afterthought to its superior add –ons. Nevertheless, it had the juice and mess of any good burger.
Served up with a couple glasses of icy water, the meal was a satisfying summer option. With a menu offering smoothies, juices, and sandwiches, as well as more sophisticated fare and regular happy hours, Chenango makes for a satisfying respite after a long swim.
