“Need You Now” is the kind of song that takes its time. It’s a slow–release, build–and–linger approach to pop — gradually layering one element on top of another until the song breaks under the weight and explodes into an aching, thrilling crescendo.
Cut Copy sounds dreamier and sadder on this track than on In Ghost Colours; singer Dan Whitford seems to be channeling Morrissey and even when “Need You Now” hits its stride, it’s still wistful. There’s nothing here like the pure, surging joy of their hit, “Lights and Music.”Cut Copy’s brand of shimmery electro–pop works well when they dive headfirst into the melody — within a more standard song length. At just under seven minutes, the first two-thirds of this song can feel like waiting for something to begin. But if you’re willing to put in the time, “Need You Now” will reward you: it gets better and better with every listen.
