To say that This Is It has emerged as the most anticipated film of the year is an understatement. Like Michael Jackson himself, the movie’s status and fame have reached epic proportions. Thankfully, Kenny Ortega’s tribute, culled together from rehearsal footage for MJ's planned London concerts, fulfills its role, celebrating the icon without overshadowing his everyman appeal.
Not only does the film project Jackson as an auteur and creative visionary, but it also showcases his inspiration to other artists. From the Chorus Line-esque opening sequence to the rehearsal footage itself, Jackson’s principal dancers have their say. To them, Michael was more than a legend. This Is It portrays him not as an inaccessible god, but as an entertainer for the people, someone who did everything “for the fans.”
Jackson's talent and humanity take center stage: we see him giggle when his music director asks for “more booty” in the instrumentation of a song and hear him gleefully call out “Wheeeee!” gliding over a concert arena in a cherry picker. But despite his childish amusement, Jackson comes across as a performer completely in his element, guiding the entire production with a clear and passionate vision.
He's at his best in “Smooth Criminal,” “Earth Song” and “Billie Jean.” His epic “Thriller,” undoubtedly one of the most recognized songs in pop music history, transcends its iconic status as Michael re-imagines it specifically for his tour, and the jaw-dropping technical marvels he plans only serve as a backdrop for his raw talent.
Michael may be gone, but This Is It shows us that his music, dance and influence will always be present. As Jackson himself says, “It’s an adventure, a great adventure.” We are only too glad to have shared it with him.
