Skip the lines and the financial hardship and preheat your oven to 400°. This weekend, Street puts Fresh Grocer’s frozen pizza selection to the test. We reviewed a bunch of pizzas running the gamut of quantity, quality and price, but we offer you the best of the bunch. Slap that sucker on the middle rack, and you’ll be on your way to cooking frozen pizza like a seasoned professional.
Freschetta Naturally Rising, 4-Cheese Pizza ($8.39) Overall Taste: As close as you can get to the real thing. Tongues were burned on this hot mess of melted cheese and tangy red sauce, but it was all worth it. Crust: While initially skeptical of the “naturally rising” crust, we totally understood the moment we saw the finished product. A perfect blend of soft and crunchy; crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Value: Eight bucks for a frozen pizza seems a bit hefty, but this one was considerably bigger than the other ones we tried. Four people could get in on this and not be disappointed. Bottom Line: Honestly delicious — the clear winner. We could eat this sober.
Mama Rosa Cheese Pizza ($1.59) Overall Taste: Both the sauce and cheese were tasty. For its small size, this pizza really packs a punch. Crust: Nice and crispy, but sometimes a little doughiness is necessary. Value: Superb. On the smaller side, but this was one of the tastier pizzas. And for under $2, you can’t lose here. Bottom Line: This unsuspectingly delicious pizza almost went under our radar. Great option for a small snack.
Amy’s Organic Pizza with Soy Cheese ($8.29) Overall Taste: Soy cheese is awkward. Once you get over that, the pizza is quite delicious. The sauce has a great flavor and the ingredients are all natural. Crust: The tastiest crust of the bunch. Not too crispy, but we didn’t mind a little warm, gooey lovin’. Value: Expensive, but what did you expect from organic? Bottom Line: A tasty, healthy alternative to standard frozen pizza.
