Fall brings Penn students many of their favorite things: crisp strolls down Locust, lunch on the Perelman Quad steps and the need for a stiff drink come Thursday night. Luckily, Oktoberfest inspires a range of seasonal beers — alternatives that aim to harmonize with the weather. There are many wonderful autumnal options deftly prepared at any one of Philadelphia’s increasingly renowned breweries (Philadelphia Brewing Company, Yards, Dock St., Victory, etc.) but we know that sometimes you’ve only got time for a quick stop at Allegro. Two of the more convenient fall brews are Sam Adams’s Oktoberfest and Michelob's Jack’s Pumpkin Spice Ale.

Oktoberfest pours clear and copper, with an off-white head. Its subtle sweetness is noticeable from the first scent of the malt, which gives it its foremost flavor (not to be confused with Sam Adams’s famous reliance on lots of hops for its usual medium-bodied robustness). As soon as Sam’s seasonal malty brew hits the tongue, expect a mild caramel and spice flavor, which gives way to a smooth and slightly sweeter finish than, say, the Boston Lager. It goes down pleasantly, and it’s will keep sippers toasty for those nearing-autumn afternoons and evenings. Sam Adams’s Oktoberfest is certainly satisfying for anyone craving beer (as opposed to the stuff they pump at frat parties). Blue Moon’s Harvest Moon serves as a very similar and acceptable substitute.

The pumpkin ale, on the other hand, looks more like Sunkist than beer and is distinguished by a childish drawing of a Jack-o’-lantern. You can’t miss the bottle, but you might have to search for the mild pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove flavors. While it's fall-inspired, the seasonal brew could use some extra spice.

Bottom Line: if you’re hankering for an easily accessible taste of autumn, Sam Adams is the clear choice.
