How many times have you drunkenly stumbled into Allegro late at night or trekked downtown for a huge slice at Lorenzo’s? Even the self-proclaimed sweet-tooths among us experience the cravings for melted cheese, crispy crust and maybe even the occasional pepperoni. As students, pizza is a staple of our diets.
Owned by the same people who supply us with chopped Gia Pronto salads, Taglio provides another locale to satisfy our pizza cravings. Conveniently located on 37th and Spruce (where the old Savory used to be) Taglio offers a new way to eat pizza: by the pound.
Customers choose from 14 kinds of pizza and have a scissor-bearing employee cut as much of it as they want. A la Sprinkles frozen yogurt, at Taglio you pay for your pizza by weight ($8.50 per pound), whether you are purchasing a large meal or a light snack after class.
The pizza itself is not so typical either. Although you can order a classic Margherita, Taglio’s more interesting pizzas are certainly worth tasting. Try the Patate (sliced potatoes, garlic cheese spread, mozzarella, pecorino cheese and rosemary) or Pancetta (Italian bacon, smoked scamorza cheese, green onions, mozzarella and pecorino cheese).
At Taglio, classics are given a twist: sausage pizza is paired with roasted red pepper; mushroom includes green onions, and white pizza (the Bianca) has garlic, pecorino cheese and oregano.
The foccacia-like crust, which is meant to be light and not too filling, could use a little added flavor; there was too much bread for the toppings.
While the dough recipe may need an upgrade, the toppings impart great flavor. Taglio boasts a high standard for ingredient quality, so everything tastes fresh. They also serve pasta, and will be rolling out calzones soon.
The next time that inevitable pizza craving hits, the gourmet option awaits you right on campus.
