Confessions of a Shopaholic is like main character Rebecca Bloomwood’s favorite pair of high heels: hot pink, bejeweled and shamelessly overstated. But there’s something refreshing about a character who is so unapologetically ditzy in her stiletto-clad climb to the top.
Becky lands a spot as a financial journalist when she misaddresses a plea for her fashion magazine dream job. She surprisingly becomes a beloved financial guru despite thousands of dollars in shopping debt. Hilarious hypocrisy — and its resulting complications — ensue.
The beauty of Shopaholic is its ridiculousness: mannequins talk, new scarves “redefine the psyche” and credit card bills are tallied over tequila shots. Yet it’s hard not to love Becky for her tirelessly happy-go-lucky attitude as she fights to keep her job, win the guy and kick her shopping habit. And if she scuffs her heels in the process, don’t worry — she has the same pair in blue.
