Fast, fresh and easy, the new Tampopo sushi restaurant does it all. Located in University City on 44th Street between Spruce and Locust, the restaurant caters to the surrounding student demographic with a no-fuss cafeteria-style setting. It's also BYOB — Booze and Bowls (you can save the planet and 50 cents!). Just don’t be dissuaded by the bland décor; at Tampopo, the focus is on the food.

Besides convenience, Tampopo offers authentic Japanese dishes with a twist. The sushi specialties include the crispy crunch roll ($7.50 for 5 pieces), a flavorful synthesis of shrimp tempura, tempura flakes, cucumber and spicy mayo. In the mood for a lighter, more succulent roll? Try the volcano roll ($9.50 for 8 pieces); it’s a refreshing convergence of the popular California and spicy tuna rolls, topped off with surprisingly complementary wasabi and coconut sauces.

For those looking for a heartier meal, their version of the bento box provides the answer. Go crazy and be creative — the more inventive the better! Protein options include tofu, chicken, beef and pork served mild or spicy (prices range from $8 to $9.50). The box comes with a side of white or brown rice, salad with ginger dressing, edamame and a choice of broccoli, mushroom, gyoza (Japanese potstickers) or egg cake.

In addition to the tofu option, vegetarians can choose from a variety of noodle dishes. The vegetable yakisoba dish ($7.25) is not overly salty, but rather well-seasoned and filling — everything you want from pan-fried noodles.

While Japanese desserts often take the backseat to the sushi, you can’t leave without trying the green tea ice cream. Rich, creamy and subtle in flavor, the confection’s earthy undertones make the authentic treat a crowd pleaser.

With its community atmosphere and emphasis on cuisine, Tampopo provides an uncomplicated yet tasty option for your sushi-eating needs.
