The menus at most fast food and chain restaurants tend to become stale after a while. There are only so many ways to liven up a bland “patty” at McDonalds. In a quest to freshen up the fast food dining experience and expand your options at the counter, we’ve found a few places that offer secret, off-menu items. While West-Coasters might brag about In-N-Out Burger’s not-so-secret menu, we give you the low-down on some of the best-kept food secrets on Penn’s campus.
McDonald's Off-menu item requested: Infamous “McGangBang” sandwich: double cheeseburger with McChicken sandwich in between the patties. Cashier’s response: Laughter followed by a “yes.” Verdict: This mega calorie-laden behemoth fast food sandwich is bangin’! Other off-menu items: Grilled Cheese (cheeseburger, no patty). Mini-Mac (dollar-menu hamburger with Big Mac sauce).
Chipotle Off-menu item requested: Chicken quesadilla. Cashier’s response: ¡Sí! Verdict: The quesadilla is a lighter alternative to the 1000-calorie burrito. Still, you can make your quesadilla just as intricate by adding meat, vegetables and other toppings. Other off-menu items: Since Chipotle uses only a few basic ingredients to make all of its dishes, you can create most anything. Try Nachos, or Mini-Burritos made with taco-sized tortillas. It’s actually part of Chipotle’s official policy to accommodate your every nit-picky desire.
Commons Jamba Juice Off-menu item requested: Anything not on the menu Cashier’s Response: They carry three “secret” drinks: White Gummy Bear, Strawberry Shortcake and Pink Starburst. Verdict: Commons Jamba pulled through, after all. Now let’s see if Subway can step up its sandwich game. Other off-menu items: Rumored to exist at other Jamba Juice establishments are Skittles-flavored and PB&J smoothies.
