I like my beer the same way I like my coffee: dark, bold and full of flavor. And just as I need a full-bodied cup of coffee to begin the morning, nothing starts a night of drinking better than a cold stout beer.

Stout beers are dark ales made from roasted malt or barley, hops, ale yeast and water. Variations on the stout exist (Baltic porter, dry stout, and Imperial stout), but all share an opaque consistency and hearty flavor.

One of the more popular dry stouts on tap at most bars is Ireland’s Guinness. Known simply as as a “pint” in its homeland, Guinness dry stout is a thick, creamy beer that can be enjoyed from the moment the first drop hits the bottom of the glass. The iconic cascading foam is a pleasure only matched by the smoothness with which it goes down the hatchet. Even though you can purchase it in bottles or cans, it’s best served in a tall glass for maximum enjoyment.

For a great local flavor, don’t miss the chocolate stout at Dock Street Brewery. The bitter stout flavor is matched with the subtle sweetness of chocolate malt to make for a unique drinking experience. If that variety isn’t available, check for their cappuccino stout. Combining dark roasted malt with the warm aroma of ground coffee, it’s easily a personal favorite.
