With Saint Patty’s day and Philly Beer Week behind us, beer drinking is on the mind. Enter: Local 44, a brand new pub located just outside Penn’s campus at the corner of 44th and Spruce. The bar has about 20 beers on tap at any given time and the draft list is constantly changing. The selection includes wheat beers, lagers, pale ales, stouts, high alcohol content libations and one winner appropriately named Old Engine Oil. Many local beers are also on the menu, highlighting Pennsylvania’s finest, including brews by Sly Fox, Yards and the Pennsylvania Brewing Company. These selections are rotated and changed on a keg-to-keg basis. The alternating drafts allow regulars to try new beers with each visit. The staff is well informed on the drafts available and they are quite helpful in making appropriate choices based on personal preference and what you are eating. Along with a variety of beers, the bar serves up inventive pub grub. Options include spinach croquettes, reuben fritters and Frito pie. Fresh cut fries and homemade plantain chips match perfectly with a toasted Cuban sandwich or a burger with everything. Memorable items include bite sized corn dogs (the crunchy cayenne cornmeal crust is divine) and mahi mahi tacos that are deliciously spicy, fresh and satisfying. In addition to the nightly beer pub scene, Local 44 also hosts Quizzo Sunday nights at 9 p.m. for those in need of a new trivia location.
