To older generations of plaid-wearing Philadelphians, Silk City has always been home to the sickest beats, the raddest dancing and the real Philadelphia. One had to be particularly hungry to order from a diner bordering a dirty dance floor, but recent renovations have cleaned up the grime and turned Silk City into a destination for any time of the day. The late-night offerings meet expectations and the dinner is delightful, but the brunch is truly legendary.
Still easy to miss on the corner of 5th and Spring Garden, patrons are bombarded by streamers, disco balls and neon signage as they enter the 1950s-inspired diner. The sizable bar is adorned with kitschy memorabilia, and even the Formica tabletops are consistent with the trailer-chic décor and groovy soundtrack. At Silk City, a mimosa or Bloody Mary is the perfect way to start the day. While the funky aesthetic may suggest an equally casual menu, diners quickly realize that Silk City means serious business. All options for typical American fare are available, in addition to surprises like the smoked salmon omelet ($10), tofu scramble ($9) and huevos rancheros ($9).
The five-dollar eggs, toast and cheese grits combo is pleasantly affordable, and the eggs are always cooked to perfection. The tower of berries and whipped cream on the very berry waffle ($9) is jaw-dropping, and the bowl of tomato bisque ($6) comes with a chunk of grilled-cheese sandwich already inside the soup! Truly genius. The daily specials are a bit more adventurous, with dishes like chickpea, chorizo and smoked chicken soup, a lobster omelet and three-bean and beef chili eggs. The Silk City Egg Scramble — stuffed with chorizo and smothered in guacamole — is always a favorite. And while the breakfast sliders ($7) might sound unassuming, this glorified Egg McMuffin is best described as deliciousness on a bun.
While a venue all the way in Northern Liberties might seem daunting, Silk City is definitely worth the trek. Surveying the eclectic clientele on Sunday morning is a fantastic way to nurse a hangover, and the creative dishes will leave you craving more.
