While Chipotle’s arrival is the hottest thing to hit the West Philadelphia burrito scene, the Tacos Don Memo food truck (38th and Sansom) is quietly making a statement of its own.
Simplicity dictates the menu at Don Memo’s. With only four items offered — burritos, tacos, tortas (traditional Mexican sandwiches) and tostadas — Don Memo’s use of fresh ingredients and commitment to authentic Mexican flavors makes this food cart distinct.
Burritos ($6) and tacos ($2) are offered in chicken, steak, pork and vegetarian varieties. The burritos are packed with homemade guacamole, sour cream and generous servings of rice and beans. Beware, though, the burritos can get messy and don’t maintain their wrap for long. However, if you’re in the mood for an easy (and cheap) meal, stick with the tacos. Seasoned to perfection and served with chopped cilantro and salsa, the no-frills tacos are quick, filling bites. When ordering, opt for the “spicy” salsa — it’s not flavorful but not overwhelming. And at $2 a piece, they are truly a steal.
Tacos Don Memo also offers authentic Mexican sodas. Try the Jarritos Tamarindo (tamarind soda) for an interesting take on cola.
Freshness and authenticity comes with a price; with wait times of up to half an hour, Tacos Don Memo is not the place for a quick meal. Many costumers call in orders, which is especially useful given these frigid temperatures.
The food is prepared with care and the service is friendly. Tacos Don Memo is a refreshing take on your conventional food cart (or your conventional Americanized Mexican food) and with prices this low, cheap eats on campus never tasted so good.
