Captain Audio
Luxury or Whether it is Better to be Loved than Feared
2000
For every Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal, there's another innovative group that remains so overlooked even Pitchfork won't give their work the recognition it deserves. Captain Audio is one of those bands.
These Dallas art-rockers - comprised of Regina Chellew, along with future Secret Machines members Brandon Curtis and Josh Garza - picked up where their ambitious debut EP My Ears Are Ringing But My Heart's OK left off, perfecting their electronic lo-fi acoustic sound with this grand opus. From the foot-stomping opener "Lemon" to the B52's-reminiscent pop-friendly "Star" to the tender, reflective "Goodbye Suite," all knit together with the piano-string ballad and shimmering synth-rocker "Piano Robotico" tracks, Luxury is a masterfully crafted work through and through.
Whether you're a Secret Machines fan, an indie snob or an earnest music seeker, Luxury is a necessity.
