Pinkberry. Yogurtland. Yo-Yo Ga-Ga. Fro-Yo A-Go-Go. Yoforia. If you've never been to one of these frozen yogurt spots, you've probably heard of their breed: tarty, healthy, fruit-on-top dessert meccas with flavors like green tea and pucker-inducing original. They have taken over parts of Los Angeles and New York to such an extent that my roommate lovingly calls Manhattan's Bleecker Street "Fro-Yo Row," where all storefronts go face-to-face in combat with spoons as swords and kiwi as grenades. Now it's Philadelphia's turn to get in on the action with the recent addition of Phileo on South Street. However, rather than following the server model of its predecessors, Phileo offers fro-yo with a twist (if you wish). Phileo is a self-service institution offering 16 handles (16!) so you can serve yourself as much of any flavor as you desire. For sweet tooths, Phileo offers Cheesecake, Butter Brickle and Snickerdoodle, among other rotating selections. Those seeking a tart treat will love Mango or Peach. In addition, one must add toppings to get the full frozen-volcano-of-sugar effect, so don't forget to mix and match with sprinkles, cereal, candy, fruit or all of the above. Once you've made your creative concoction, the staff weighs your cup and you pay accordingly. Sounds too good to be true, so buyer beware: at 49 cents/ounce, your do-it-yourself can carry quite the price tag. In the end though, Phileo celebrates your taste buds just as they are. Don't change, they say, just eat what you want, how you want it. So yo! Go get it.
