Deliverance
2003
Bubba Sparxxx never gets much respect, and ditties like “Ms. New Booty” didn't help his cause. But a bit of digging in his back catalog uncovers his collaboration with Timbaland on 2003’s overlooked Deliverance — rap music at its best. Cohesive from top to bottom, it carries on the spirit of old school hip-hop while taking advantage of modern production. Just as early hip-hop gave a voice to a generation of Bronx B-Boys, Deliverance gave Sparxxx a stage to spit his unique perspective on a poor Southern upbringing. ce showcases Timbaland’s best production of his career, finding the producer reappropriating bluegrass and country the same way Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash found a new use for soul break beats.
Timbaland’s finest moment is “Comin’ Round,” where his trademark snapping drums are matched with a perfect sample from Colorado’s Yonder Mountain String Band. It’s a great juxtaposition of powerful lyrics and dancey beats — a “best of both worlds” brand of hip-hop that doesn’t come along too often.
