Fiume

229 45th Street

Do you like to think about class struggle, the evils of hierarchical society, and plot the downfall of compulsory government while sipping on PBR? Then Fiume is the place for you.

Fiume is a bar with an anarchist reputation, but these days it attracts a much wider audience. Located in a small rented room above the Ethiopian restaurant Abyssinia at 45th and Locust, on any given night you can find a good mixture of "die hards and wild cards"occupying the barstools

The bartender says that Fiume works hard to project a "co-op feel." The decor is sparse and sentimental, like the sign above the bar that reads "bartender is not responsible for the sex you don't have." Live music draws large standing room-only crowds on several weeknights, consisting of a diverse audience of punk rockers, hipsters and university professors.

If you come for the music, you'll return for the beer selection, one of the most eclectic in West Philadelphia. Prices are affordable and range from $1.50 to $5.00 depending on the label.

If beer isn't your cup of tea, then try the Texan version. Be careful - it takes just one of these drinks to hit you like a ton of bricks. If you've had too much, the bartender will hit the gong hanging behind the bar to let you know it's time to leave.
