We Own the Night explosively changes the traditional crime drama to include a powerful familial message. The all-star cast is led by Joaquin Phoenix, who brilliantly dons the role of Bobby Green, the stereotypical black sheep who has been shunned by his family of decorated members of the NYPD. While his brother (Mark Wahlberg) and father (Robert Duvall) are respected policemen, Bobby leads a separate life as a manager of a hot New York club. His workplace is reminiscent of the glamour of Studio 54 - all set to a soundtrack of Blondie's greatest hits.
Bobby eventually crosses paths with his family when a criminal he has ties with becomes a wanted man. Hits are put on Bobby's father and brother because they are leading the task force to bring down the criminal. Now, Bobby must find a way to protect both his family and himself.
The beginning of the movie contains little action, but as the plot progresses, so does the activity onscreen. The action scenes are captivatingly filmed, juxtaposing beautiful cinematography with gritty violence. Though the plot can be predictable, the impressive cast more than makes up for it. Phoenix especially deserves accolades for completely immersing himself in the film and presenting a character harboring a full range of emotion. Likewise, Eva Mendes deserves applause for her portrayal of Bobby's supportive girlfriend. Thanks to these strong performances and some well-choreographed action, We Own the Night makes for a thoughtful crime drama and entertaining family saga.
