Arjun Srinivas, a senior member of Dhamaka, Penn's all-male South Asian dance troupe, talks about dancing with himself and doing good deeds.
Street: Where did you learn your moves?
Arjun Srinivas: I came to Penn with two left feet. Joining Dhamaka was a huge learning curve. Now that I can move a bit better than I used to it's easier to be creative in terms of choreography and coming up with new moves.
Street: What's the hardest dance move you've had to master?
AS: I'm not a very graceful dancer. Dhamaka moves are supposed to emulate "manly grace..." so almost everything I do is challenging at first.
Street: Do you ever dance in front of the mirror? If so, what do you dance to?
AS: All the time. I'm a big fan of "popping and locking", so mostly I try to do this when I'm alone with a mirror.
Street: What's your favorite place to bust a move?
AS: In the shower . Oh wait, are we talking about dancing?
Street: Like the Fonz, you were known for your hair. What happened?
AS: Well, this is a sore subject for me. A few weeks ago I cut off my locks and donated them to the Locks of Love program. I liked [my long hair] because I could always change my look. I could wear it up, down, get it braided, straighten it, pigtails, et cetera. I had a lot of fun with it. And I still have dreams where my hair is still around.
