The semester just keeps speeding along, and as you stare at your daily planner, it seems like there is nothing to look forward to but exams, papers and all-nighters. But think positively - things could be worse. Here are some people who are having a worse week than you are. Maybe things aren't that bad after all.
Lincoln vs. Anthrax
We've got to give Abraham Lincoln props. The man helped our country through some tough times and never lost his cool, or his hat. But this week poor Abe's legacy was tarnished when authorities were forced to close the Lincoln Memorial for fear of a terrorist attack after finding notes reading "Do you know what anthrax is?" and "Do you know what a bomb is?" Perhaps if Lincoln were around today he would try to answer these profound and complex questions, but alas Honest Abe has not appeared to defend his dignity. Luckily, it turned out to be a false alarm and the memorial was reopened soon after. But you can't help but wonder if someone forgot to make a wish on their lucky penny.
Inmates vs. Yarn
No matter how bad things get, you can always console yourself with the fact that at least you're not in prison. Now here's one more reason to be glad you're a law-abiding citizen - jail inmates in Utah are knitting their way to freedom. In their spare time in the slammer, the convicts knit hats, mittens and booties to give to needy children. As one of the jolly knitters noted, "We might all be criminals, but some of us have big hearts." Who knew peace on earth was just a crochet away? Just be thankful you are under no obligation to save the world one stitch at a time.
Slouching vs. Your Mom
You've heard it time and time again from your mother: Don't slouch. Sit up straight. Don't sleep around. But momma doesn't always know best - at least about the first two. New research shows that slouching is actually better for backs than sitting up straight because it reduces pressure on the spine, whereas sitting straight can lead to trapped nerves or slipped disks. So the next time mom yells at you for slumping in your seat, tell her to shut her mouth and lean back.
