The British comedy Confetti seems to have it all: nudists, tennis-playing freaks and overzealous musical devotees. What more could someone want? Adding to the allure is the talented cast of British actors with recognizable faces and not so memorable names. With awkward and bizarre character and camera commentary, the comedy obviously draws influences from films like Best in Show.
Confetti features three couples battling it out to win the title of "Most Original Wedding of the Year." All of the finalists have decided to incorporate their respective passions into their weddings. Michael and Joanna (Robert Webb, Olivia Colman) are determined to exchange their vows nude; Josef and Isabelle (Martin Freeman, Jessica Stevenson) are set on a tennis-themed wedding; and Matt and Sam (Stephen Mangan, Meredith MacNeill) want to exchange nuptials in an all-singing, all-dancing ceremony. Archie and Gregory (Vincent Franklin, Jason Watkins), a pair of flamboyantly gay and enthusiastic wedding planners, have been delegated the difficult task of creating these strange weddings. The naturalists refuse to wear any clothes, and the tennis couple is so anal-retentive that they don't think much past "win, win, win." Furthermore, the musical enthusiasts insist on singing their vows despite being tone deaf.
The uncomfortable silences and clumsy dialogue tow the line between weird and funny. Ultimately, Confetti will be amusing to those who enjoy improvisational humor and be too strange to those who do not.
