If you're reading this right now, chances are, you're blazed off your rocker. Since you're incapable of studying or doing anything productive, might as well go out there and rent a classic stoner film because you probably lacked the foresight to get your Netflix cue arranged with 4/20 in mind...
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004): If you're of the Indian/Asian pothead variety, this one's for you. Written by Penn alum Jon Hurwitz, this multicultural film should be followed by a trip to one of the Indian buffets around campus. Doogie Howser's badass cameo also makes it worthwhile.
Up in Smoke (1978): This is the first film ever created by the classic comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Seriously, you don't get to see Cheech Marin often enough these days unless you're watching a rerun of Nash Bridges (God bless Chuck Norris!). If you need a retro-comedy because you're of the quasi-classy stoner variety, this is a must see.
Half Baked (1998): This is Dave Chapelle at his finest on the big screen; all of the marijuana jargon you've ever heard is thrown into this epic. The celebrities making cameos in this one make it an easy sell, including Willie Nelson, Snoop Dog, Jon Stewart and Bob Saget. Bring out your bong named Wesley Pipes for this one, and take a hit every time the characters do.
Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cuticle (1999): You don't need to like Star Wars to appreciate this parody, but you must be completely stoned. This film is less than a half-hour long, but we all know that time doesn't really matter in certain mental states.
Super Troopers (2001): It was a travesty that Kevin Heffernan didn't win an Oscar for his portrayal of Officer Rodney Farva. Nonetheless, this film about asshole cops battling against Northeastern potheads should remind everyone of those oh-so-sweet high school days. This Vermont-based crime comedy is riveting, and even more riveting a few blunts later.
Clerks (1994): In honor of Kevin Smith's recent visit to campus, make sure you tune into this black-and-white classic. For the New Jersey smoker in all of us, this film has more witty dialogue than a full season of Entourage. As you think of your internship at __________ (insert Investment Bank here), think about how much more fun you'd be having if you failed your drug test and spent the summer back in suburbia working at a video store.
The Big Lebowski (1998): If you're not already a member of the White Russian aficionado cult who watches this film religiously, you're in for a treat. If you're into unemployed white men in their 40s who refer to themselves as by the proper noun, "Dude," this is the film for you. Starring the fantastic four, Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Tara Reid (in her golden years), this is a must-watch. At the very least, its soothing classic rock soundtrack will enhance your nap.
