Getting out of the cab at the Jamaican Jerk Hut, socca jams and the sweet smell of Caribbean spices drift through the air. No, this isn't spring in Kingston; it's 1436 South St. at a local island-themed restaurant, which features a whole lot of Jamaican soul. If you're in withdrawal from the island paradise that you visited during Spring Break, this establishment will be your fix.
Borrowing the atmosphere from a beach cabana, the Jerk Hut is an intimate eatery seating about six small tables. The hours of operation are reasonable; they're open Monday-Thursday from 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 5:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
However, be warned that the Jerk Hut is not for the faint of heart -- that is, those with bland palates. Jamaican food is typically spicier than most varieties. Whether you sample a classic beef patty on coco bread ($2.50) or a side dish like okra stew ($3.00), the trend in most of their dishes is the spicy flavor.. The best part about eating at this restaurant is that the inexpensive side dishes are just as filling as an average meal. If you're looking for an entree though, these meals can be priced up to about $20, although the more expensive items tend to be seafood. The Jerk Hut also features many traditional Jamaican beverages such as "Ting" ($2.50), pineapple soda ($1.50) and a variety of home-brewed juices from typical island staples such as sorrel, ginger and mango. The service is a bit slow, but it's well worth the wait. Besides, they provide crayons so that you can draw on the paper place mats to pass the time. This restaurant should not be missed, but don't forget to bring cash because the Jerk Hut does not accept credit cards. Overall, if you're looking for a break from your traditional meals, head to the Jamaican Jerk Hut for food that's "hot, hot, hot!"
