Jewelry has been a fashion staple since your grandmother wore those white pearls to her afternoon tea. You've been borrowing your mother's old necklaces since you could find the lock to her jewelry box, but where can you go to find some new pieces that you can add to your collection? Look no further than Dahlia's. Just off of Rittenhouse Square in Center City, the store is known throughout the area for its beautiful jewelry. And it's easy to see why: the place has an astonishing selection of accessories from earrings to Tiffany lamps to scarves and evening bags.
Just walking into the store is a sensory experience. Glass cases of crystal chandelier earrings in every possible color adorn the magenta and purple walls. Colorful glass and ceramic wind chimes hang from the ceiling. The sign on the door says "Treasures from the Holy Land," and they're completely serious: almost everything in the store is handcrafted in Israel, including the ambience. Israeli customers often tell Barbra, a friendly saleswoman at the store, that Dahlia's is "just like being in Israel."
But don't be intimidated if funky is not your cup of tea. The store offers an eclectic selection to suit all tastes, selling anything from toe rings to tiaras for weddings. Belts, scarves and evening bags, as well as picture frames and statues, add to the long list of accessories sold at Dahlia's.
The price of these items is equally variable. A necklace with a few crystals and a fabric base can sell for less than $100, while the more intricate pieces (including a gorgeous crystal-adorned necklace with a metal base) cost upwards of $300. A painted scarf with a floral pin costs $39, and a blue handbag with floral beading is only $14, perfect for the college student's budget.
However, the most interesting pieces offered at Dahlia's are the Judaica. Also handcrafted in Israel, the store sells everything from mezuzahs and menorahs to Hamsas, hand-shaped necklaces supposed to bring the wearer good luck. And though you can't pair them with a cute outfit, the religious items are every bit as beautiful as the jewelry. If this still isn't what you're looking for, the store even sells little greeting cards for every occasion.
So take a ride down to Rittenhouse and take a look at Dahlia's. Even if you don't buy that necklace you've been eyeing, it's worth the sensory experience.
