Those who may believe there is nothing enticing west of 40th street clearly haven't been to Rx. Located within walking distance of campus, Rx serves some of the best brunch around.
Everything about it is eclectic, from its diners to its decor and cuisine. It is housed in an old apothecary, complete with vintage Coca-Cola machines, retro scales and medicine jars filled with flowers at each table. Patrons include college students and other young couples, but you may even spot your professor dining here. Sit inside where the tables are a mismatched grouping of colored wood accented by black and white photos on the walls, or outside on patio furniture where beautiful old homes and passersby can be admired.
The food reflects the restaurant's ambience, with entrees varying from traditional brunch meals like grilled hanger steak, served with poached eggs, sauteed spinach, potatoes, and hollandaise ($12), to vegan friendly options like orange-soy glazed tofu, over grilled vegetables and soy-scented greens ($7). Meals are presented on stark white plates, needing no embellishments as the vibrant colors of these organic and free-range items stand for themselves. Ample portions of the savory fare leave diners full and feeling good about what they ate, knowing it came from local growers and bakeries. Enjoy an endless cup of La Colombe coffee, or bring some Champagne for mid-morning mimosas -- after all, it is a BYOB!
Once you've mastered the walk to Rx for brunch, stop by for dinner, where the offerings are just as unique. Entrees range from $14 to $22, or take advantage of its prix fixe menu ($25, Tuesday to Thursday). No matter what the meal, the Rx experience is truly worth the walk!
