Some of the world's most prominent celebrities, such as Foxy Brown, Mary J. Blige and Fat Joe, look to Misa to fine tune their style. After starting out assisting with clothing for an R&B video in the early '90s, Hylton-Brim now heads Chyna Doll Enterprises, an agency which houses an array of stylists, and is in demand throughout the entertainment industry. Street got the chance to ask this maverick a few questions.
How would you describe the stylist approach at Chyna Doll?
The stylist approach at Chyna Doll Enterprises is a very intimate, laid back, hands-on experience.
Who are some designers we should be looking for in 2005?
For Fall '05, you need to watch for Krome Class, Lonsdale and Apple Bottom.
A lot of the clients, such as Mary J. Blige and Lil' Kim, are hip hop artists. Will Chyna Doll be branching out to style actors and other celebrities?
I was a costume designer for The Cookout movie and had the opportunity to work with Danny Glover, Farrah Fawcett, Meagon Good and Jennifer Lewis. I also style Kimora Lee Simmons for the television show Life & Style and Chris Rock and Serena Williams are also clients. So we have already branched out.
How did you know you wanted a career in fashion?
After assisting on a Jodeci video in the early '90s -- by being at the right place at the right time -- I knew this was a career I would like to further and pursue. I always had a unique fashion sense.
What is a typical day in the life of a stylist?
There is no "typical day" in the life of a stylist. Everyday is different. Being a stylist is about staying on top of your game through your work. Ethic, relationships with fashion designers and clothing companies and researching or creating the next trend. It also includes relationship skills and being professional in your approach. These are things a great stylist works on and manages daily.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be in your position?
My advice would be to make sure you are in business with an investor who has capital to launch the line successfully, and believe in the product.
What has been one of your favorite projects?
I have enjoyed all of the clients I have had the opportunity to work with.
What current trends do you think just need to go?
There is no trend in fashion that needs to go, because fashion is always changing and trends make fashion complete.
