Upon hearing the name Cucina Pazzo, one instantly wonders if Steven Starr has added yet another chic hot spot to downtown Center City. However, this cozy Italian bistro offers a refreshing change from the typical "see-and-be-seen" restaurant scene. Located in South Philly, it offers the chance to get off campus and experience a side of Philadelphia the typical Penn student has yet to explore.
The exterior of Cucina Pazzo is unpretentious to say the least. The intimate setting is reminiscent of a little piece of Italy imported to Philadelphia. The dimly lit eating area is extremely romantic but could also play host to a family dining out. The seating is limited (with a back room for large groups), which isn't a bad thing -- it only adds to the intimacy factor that is so special about this restaurant. The authenticity -- combined with a gracious sense of hospitality -- makes you feel right at home, but not in that "ma and pa" type of way.
The menu is moderately priced and features unique twists on staple Italian fare. The grilled calamari served over a white bean salad ($9) was delicious. The veal ann entr‚e was a tantalizing array of veal medallions, portabello mushrooms and jumbo shrimp stuffed with jumbo crab in a lemon thyme veal reduction. The gnocchi, which featured spinach dumplings in a rich gorgonzola cream sauce, sounded especially enticing as well.
The highlight of the menu, and one of the most unique aspects of Cucina Pazzo, was the menu's wide array of imported desserts direct from Italy. Each week the selections change, offering a different surprise upon each visit. Do not pass on the mouth watering Tiramisu, which may have surpassed decadence. The restaurant will soon feature fresh sorbets served in the shells of coconut, pineapple and other fruits.
Cucina Pazzo owner and executive chef Michael Moss has been a resident of South Philly all of his life and has finally been able to bring his passion into his neighborhood. Cucina Pazzo has a fresh, unique atmosphere that is intriguing -- yet still speaks to a family-oriented clientele.
If you are looking for a cozy atmosphere for your first date or for a non-commercial Olive Gardenesque atmosphere (with much better food!), Cucina Pazzo is perfect. Not simple enough to be boring, this restaurant is refined and uses its down-to-earth quality to its greatest advantage.
