The highly anticipated release of a full–length trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay–Part 1 does not disappoint. Fans of the dystopian series about Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her “rage against the machine” in the form of President Snow (Donald Sutherland) should maintain their high expectations. The picturesque dystopian film looks set to stick its landing with plenty of romance and action as the underground rebels of District 13 make war with the dictatorial Capitol. Mockingjay–Part 1 flies into theaters on November 21.
What We Love: For one thing, we again have Jennifer Lawrence in the news for her acting, rather than for this or for dating the guy who sings this. Even with her tremendous acting turns in "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle," JLaw’s return to the big–budget action series that made her a household name is an event in and of itself. Also of note is one of the final acting appearances of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who tragically passed away in February.
What We Don’t: Critics have derided the final novel in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy for its poor characterization and gloomy tone. While it may be too soon to transfer these criticisms to the film, this one certainly ratchets up the violence. Just look at the end of the trailer, where JLaw shoots down a plane with a bow and arrow. Okay, well that may actually be cool. Regardless, this film is clearly trying to take a note out of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’s playbook and use the split–in–two movie to its advantage. Hopefully, they can make it work.
