Ask Ego: What should I wear my first day of class?

Q: What should I wear my first day of class?
A: On Wednesdays we wear pink, so since the first day of class is a Wednesday… well, yeah, duh. You can’t wear a tank top two days in a row, and we only wear jeans and track pants on Fridays. Oh yeah, and if you don’t follow these rules, you can’t sit with us at lunch anymore.
Just kidding, guys! This isn’t high school anymore, and in having escaped the confines of those high school walls you have also escaped pressure to maintain clique–y and contrived styles (unless you join a frat or sorority in the spring) or even to maintain the appearance that you care at all how you look.
So let your freak flag fly and wear whatever you want, and don’t stress about it too much. You’re going to see a slew of styles that are eclectic, ritzy, sophisticated, and kooky, but there will also be plenty of jeans, t–shirts, and sneakers. There are definitely people on Penn’s campus who seem like they just wear sweatpants all the time, and they have friends too.
Long story short, come next Wednesday, if you wear an outfit that is not obtrusive or attention–seeking, you’ll be in good shape. You’ll soon learn that your peers care far more about what you’re saying in class than what you’re wearing.
