Fiona Apple, "Every Single Night"
Fiona Apple is back after a seven year intermission, and in “Every Single Night,” she’s as possessed as ever. Apple’s vocals are naked. They declare war on her own brain, warbling and gasping as the artist sings, “when the pain comes in/Like a second skeleton.” Apple’s sparse instrumentation is a skeleton itself, built of toy piano flourishes and snare rolls that are few and far between. This a lullaby sung for those about to crack; yet Apple emerges empowered, embracing her neurosis. “Every single fight’s alright with my brain,” she tells us. If you’re looking to add some spook to your summer, search no further than this freak out from the queen of catharsis.
