This family recipe shows how to make a cheap, easy and delicious version of the traditional Greek custard pie. Enjoy for breakfast or dessert!
Ingredients:
6 cups milk
3/4 stick butter
1 cup farina (cream of wheat)
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 eggs
1 stick butter, melted
1 lb phyllo dough, covered with moist towel
Syrup:
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups water
3 orange slices
2 cinnamon sticks
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Heat milk and butter in large saucepan. Once butter is melted, whisk in farina, sugar and vanilla. Stir constantly. When farina becomes thick, beat eggs in blender. Slowly whisk in eggs to saucepan. Remove from heat. Butter a 9×12 inch baking pan. Layer half of phyllo sheets in pan, brushing each layer with melted butter. Pour farina mixture into pan. Repeat layering remaining sheets on top of custard. Tuck any extending phyllo inside pan. Cut pie with knife into squares. Bake for 45 minutes. Simmer water, sugar, orange and cinnamon in small saucepan. Pour syrup over hot custard pie. Let cool and serve.
